School jazz bands take honors

"South Whidbey High School's jazz band, directed by Brent Purvis, took second place in their division at the Bellevue Jazz Festival.The Langley Middle School and South Whidbey High School jazz bands were both award winners in their respective categories at Bellevue Jazz Festival 2001 held May 11 and 12 at Bellevue High School.The LMS Jazz Band directed by Chris Harshman placed second in middle school competition. Student Charlie Patnoe won a soloist award.The SWHS jazz band directed by Brent Purvis placed second in A/AA high school competition. Band member Miles Ranisavlijevic won a soloist award.Forty-eight jazz bands from schools in Washington and Oregon participated in the two day competition. The panel that adjudicated this year's event included David Joyner, director of jazz studies at Pacific Lutheran University, David Jarvis associate professor of music at Washington State University, Rodd Tapper, director of jazz at Eastern Washington University and Brian Kirk, director of jazz at Seattle Central Community College. "
