Four chosen for Girls State

"South Whidbey students attending Girls State this year include, from the left, Hannah Shafaat, Amy Berto, Melody Ward and Stephanie Jacobson.South Whidbey American Legion Post 141 and Auxiliary is sending an all-time high of four students to Evergreen Girls State this summer.All juniors, the girls include Hannah Shafaat, Amy Berto, Melody Ward and Stephanie Jacobson. In past years the Legion Auxiliary sent only two girls, but Post Commander Chuck Hinckel, Americanism Committee Chair Dick McClellan, and Auxiliary Committee Chair Betty Lehman concurred that all four applicants were very impressive and deserved to attend.Evergreen Girls State is a week-long event that will begin June 10 at Central Washington University in Ellensburg. Girls from throughout the state will meet to create their own state government and elect their own representatives.Girls State attracts about 350 students to the Central Washington campus. Each year, two of them are chosen by their peers to represent the state of Washington at Girls Nation in Washington, D.C. "
