"Hosting Open Mic Night at the Smilin' Dog on Friday will be (from left) Dan Monte-Calvo, Buffy Cribbs and Ben Gilmore. Not pictured is the fourth member of the band, John Kimbel. Musicians, poets and singers, and those who enjoy listening, are invited to take part in a special Open Mic Night at the Smilin' Dog Coffee House Friday, June 1, at 7 p.m. The event will benefit Friends of Freeland. Hosting and emceeing the evening's parade of local stars are four familiar faces: Buffy Cribbs, Ben Gilmore, John Kimbel and Dan Monte-Calvo. The quartet of musicians, who haven't given themselves a name yet, bring together influences from the worlds of rock, folk, bluegrass, traditional Irish folk and blues. All are longtime Whidbey residents. They have been playing together for about six months, for fun and because, said one member, It sharpens our individual talents. We hope everyone will join in and support their local music scene, said Friends of Freeland board member Jeanne Juneau. Beverly Graham has agreed to loan us her excellent PA system and Marty at the Smilin' Dog is generously donating the space in the 'Back 40' of the coffee house.A $3 donation to benefit Friends of Freeland will be accepted at the door. For more information call 331-1224 or e-mail info@friendsoffreeland.org. "
