"Twelve veteran South Whidbey softball players qualified for the Players Choice Softball Association state championship late last month when they won the Sporty's Beef and Brew Tournament at Everett's Kach Park. The co-ed, adult rec-league team pounded teams from the Players Choice Eastern division to compile a 4-2 record for the two-day tournament.Led by tournament all-star first baseman Angela West and catcher Shawna Haynes, the South Whidbey Islanders cruised into a semifinal game against Seattle's Docs. The two teams were closely matched, but the Islanders managed to squeak by on an 11-9 score to go to the championship game. That final game, against the Slammers from Issiquah, afforded the Islanders more breathing room. They won 10-6.Next up for the team is a tournament at the South Whidbey Community Park July 14-15. The team will then travel to Federal Way's Celebration Park on Sept. 15 to compete in the state tournament. "
