Rear-end collision sends woman to hospital

"A Freeland woman was taken to the hospital Saturday afternoon after her car was rear-ended on Highway 525.Karen Furman, 43, was stopped in the northbound lane of Highway 525 near Freeland Avenue waiting to turn left when a 2001 Ford Windstar driven by Michael Kaplan, 17, of Los Angeles, hit her 1994 Ford Taurus.The force of the impact crushed and bent the rear of Furman's car, making the car undrivable. The Windstar suffered significant front-end damage.According to the Washington State Patrol, Kaplan, his passenger Katie Kaplan, 14, and Furman were all wearing seatbelts. Paramedics transported Furman to Whidbey General Hospital, where she was treated for a minor neck injury and released. The Kaplans were uninjured.Fire District 3 personnel closed a section of road between Freeland Avenue and Cameron Road for about an hour while law enforcement investigated the scene. "
