"Sheriff Mike Hawley, wearing his Island County Fire Marshal's hat, on Tuesday renewed the existing ban on all outdoor burning in Island County. The ban was first implemented on July 13. Hawley's action Tuesday extends the ban against all outdoor fires, even those for which a Department of Natural Resources permit was issued.Hawley cited the continuing hot, dry weather, as well as the reduced availability of fire fighting equipment in the county, some of which has been dispatched to help with fires elsewhere. The only exceptions to the burn ban are recreational fires in established campground fire pits lined with metal or concrete, or cooking fires in barbecue. Hawley said the renewed ban will stay in effect for 30 days unless terminated earlier. "
