Foul septic contract resolved for South Whidbey Fire/EMS

A surprise monetary increase to a septic replacement contract with South Whidbey Fire/EMS and a contractor was resolved Thursday.

Fire Chief Rusty Palmer reported to the commissioners the district received a new figure for the work, which was reduced by more than half. The work at issue was by an electrician who was subcontracted by Anacortes-based Apt Environmental Solutions, though Palmer said the work was necessary.

“As it turns out, this was stuff we would have had to do anyways,” he said. “The only flaw was that they didn’t notify us.”

The contract increase was about $220, though the first estimate was $500 more than the original $11,960 contract. Fire commissioners Mike Helland and Kenon Simmons approved the increase; Commissioner Bob Elliot was away on vacation.
