To celebrate their outstanding fundraising efforts on Whidbey Island, Relay for Life organizers are planning a reunion for those involved in the walk on Oct. 18.

Island County ranked third in this year’s American Cancer Society’s 2008 Relay for Life fundraising efforts.

Based on a population of 79,224 for Whidbey Island, the organization raised $2.62 per island resident for a total of $240,830 collectively from both north and South Whidbey relays.

The final total for South Whidbey was $47,082, just short of the $50,000 goal.

To celebrate this achievement, and the 25th anniversary of the first Relay for Life, there will be a South Whidbey relay reunion for former team captains, committee members and event chairs from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 18 at Bayview Hall. Anyone interested in helping with the 2009 Relay for Life is also most welcome.
