A Ford F-250 pickup truck and KIA sport utility vehicle collided Sunday afternoon at Cultus Bay Road and Highway 525.

Both drivers and one passenger were sent to Whidbey General Hospital as a precautionary measure; none were from South Whidbey and everyone had their seat belts fastened. The front ends of both vehicles suffered severe damage.

Washington State Trooper Norm Larsen said the driver of the KIA, Mary Shaw from Kirkland, was making a left turn onto Cultus Bay when it was struck by Mark Klco of Seattle in the Ford truck driving south on the highway.

Trooper Larsen wouldn’t assess blame for the accident pending further interviews with the drivers, but cautioned that people need to be careful at intersections.

“It’s important not to become complacent about stop lights,” he said.

No citations had been issued as of Monday morning.
