South Whidbey Parks & Recreation District’s skate park in Community Park, closed for several months for a major upgrade, is now open.

A concrete apron was added around the park and officials felt that safety was of paramount importance while the project was under way.

The project added 6,000 square feet of concrete. Before the change was made, kids on BMX bikes slid into the dirt, then wheeled around for a return circuit but created a slimy hazard for skaters, especially when the ground was wet.

Safety fencing erected around the skate park while contractors excavated and poured concrete has been removed.

“The park district appreciates the public’s cooperation during this period of closure, and hopes folks will now come out to enjoy the park,” said director Terri Arnold.
