SWC schedules new-roof party for Saturday

A “raise the roof” work party to replace the roof on South Whidbey Commons property in Langley is planned for this weekend.

Work begins at 9 a.m. Saturday, July 18, on the roof over Island Coffeehouse & Books at 124 Second St. The old moss-covered roof will be removed and replaced with a modern one, under the supervision of builders and architects, said Clyde Monma of South Whidbey Commons, a nonprofit organization offering youth programs to the community.

Monma said a complete landscaping of the grounds is also under way, featuring pathways made of bricks. To raise funds to offset the project’s cost, each brick can be “adopted” and engraved with the name or logo of a business or individual, he said.

A public dedication and open house will be Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 7, to celebrate the transformation.
