If you see some smoke near Bayview Corner soon, don’t panic. Island County Fire District 3 crews will just be honing their firefighting skills.

Chief Dan Stout said this week that some gravel and dirt will be moved around in the trees and a portable structure built in the next couple of weeks for firefighters to practice their smoke-ventilation technique.

The exercises will be on district property between Bayview School and the Good Cheer Food Bank.

Stout said the structure will be designed to be removable, and may be stored at the site for future use.

“We just needed an area to do something that we’ve wanted to do for a long time,” Stout said. “This is going to work pretty well.”

The district bought the 4.5-acre parcel for use as a new central facility, but has delayed plans until the economy improves.

Firefighters have also used the property to practice emergency responses to wrecked vehicles.
