Island County Fire District 3 commissioners will meet this weekend to discuss a contract for the district's new fire chief.

The meeting will be 8 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 31, at the Clinton Fire Station, 6435 Central Ave.

Earlier this month, commissions announced that H.L. "Rusty" Palmer, 57, the current fire chief of the Jackson Hole, Teton County, Wyo. fire department, has been offered the District 3 job.

Palmer is scheduled to meet with district personnel next week. He is expected to assume the post in January.

Palmer's selection was the culmination of a nationwide campaign by an executive-search firm in Oregon that was hired by the district.

Twenty-five candidates where selected by the firm, and the top six were interviewed by a personnel team appointed by the district.

Commissioners then selected Palmer from the top four candidates.
