The aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln will pass by the south end of Whidbey Island this afternoon as the Nimitz-class carrier departs for two weeks of routine training off the coast of Southern California.

Navy Lt. Cmdr. William Marks, the ship's spokesman, said the carrier will also undergo certification of its flight deck before the flattop returns to its home port in Everett.

The Lincoln departed the Navy base in Everett just before 1:30 p.m. today.
