Bailey, Price Johnson and Johnson maintain election leads

Additional counts continue to keep incumbent candidates in state and county races affecting Whidbey Island ahead of challengers this week.

As of Friday, state Sen. Barbara Bailey had increased her lead over challenger Angie Homola with 55.92 percent of the vote in combined Island, Skagit and Snohomish counties.

Congressman Rick Larsen is still ahead of Marc Hennemann with 64.84 percent and both state representatives are continuing their leads over their challengers — Norma Smith with 72.49 percent over Michael Scott and Dave Hayes with 58.27 percent over Doris Brevoort.

Island County commissioner incumbents are also looking at another term.

Helen Price Johnson was leading over challenger Gary Wray with 55.45 percent of the vote and Jill Johnson was winning with 60.83 percent.

Island County voters were voting pretty consistently with the rest of Washington state.

Overall, county voters agreed with approving with several initiatives which are passing at a state level including: Initiative 1433, which concerns labor standards, passing with 58 percent;

Initiative 735, which concerns proposed amendment to federal constitution, is failing by 63 percent;

Initiative 1491, which concerns court-issued extreme risk protection orders temporarily preventing access to firearms, passing with 70 percent;

Initiative 1501, which concerns penalties for taking advantage of seniors and vulnerable individuals, passing with 71 percent.

Voters also rejected along with state voters: Initiative 1464, which concerns campaign finance laws and lobbyists, is failing by 53.52 percent; and Initiative 732, which concerns taxes, is failing with 59 percent votes against.

Fifty percent of county voters agreed with the 55 percent of state voters to reelect Jay Inslee as governor and almost 49.19 percent voted for Hillary Clinton for president; 43 percent of the county voted for Donald Trump.

Voter turnout was 77.83 percent in Island County, much higher than the state turnout of 60.46 percent.
