Backyard bonfires will soon be outlawed on Whidbey Island.
Island County Sheriff Mark Brown, acting in his capacity as county fire marshal, has decreed a Type 1 burn ban for Island County starting at noon on July 13. It will remain in effect until further notice from Brown.
Under the ban, no outdoor burning will be allowed — not even permitted — except for recreational fires in approved fire pits.
Brown said reduced moisture levels, low humidity and warmer weather in the county increases the risk of fire. Brown consulted with the fire departments on the island and the Northwest Clean Air Agency.
People should call 911 to report violations, according to the sheriff’s office.
