Photographer wins festival award

South Whidbey Record photographer David Welton won a third place in the photography contest at the Edmonds Arts Festival last weekend.

Welton submitted two photographs, one of which ran on the front page of The Record earlier this year.

“Last year they told me only a third of the entrants had a piece selected,” Welton said. “I was one of those fortunate photographers last year, but this year I had two.”

He submitted an image of a young girl greeting her sailor father returning from a long deployment and a sports photo.

The image of girls at a swim meet at Island Athletic Club in January won third place in the photography division.

When Welton doesn’t freelance as a photographer for The Record, he is a cardiologist for the University of Washington.
