A Clinton resident was transported to Whidbey General Hospital Friday morning after her car struck a tree along State Highway 20 near Libbey Road.

At about 9:20 a.m., 30-year-old Clinton resident Piper Travis was driving a 1991 Toyota Corolla north on Highway 20. She was reportedly going down a hill heading toward the Libbey Road intersection on Central Whidbey.

Sgt. Bruce Maier with the Washington State Patrol said witnesses noticed the car was swerving in the lane prior to the accident. She veered off the highway, and drove about 300 feet along an embankment parallel with the highway before colliding with a tree.

The car ended up in the woods just outside the view of passing motorists.

Emergency personnel transported Travis to nearby Whidbey General Hospital.

A hospital spokeswoman reported that Travis was being treated and was in stable condition.

A press memo from the Washington State Patrol states that Travis fell asleep at the wheel.

Motorists driving on Highway 20 Friday morning encountered a slight delay because one lane of the roadway was closed while emergency personnel treated Travis.
