A man is in critical condition today following a head-on collision on Highway 525.

The wreck occurred around noon just south of the intersection at Crawford Road. The man was transported by ambulance to WhidbeyHealth Medical Center in Coupeville with life threatening injuries. Two others were also sent to the hospital, though emergency responders described their injures as “minor.”

The crash involved two vehicles: a southbound blue pick-up truck with a single male driver, and a northbound white Dodge Durango with a man, women and a dog. According to South Whidbey Fire/EMS Deputy Chief Jon Beck, the accident occurred when the truck veered into northbound lane of traffic and struck the front driver’s side of the Durango.

After impact, the Durango struck the guardrail and came to a halt. The truck continued into the northbound lane, striking the guardrail before going head first off the road and into a ditch.

The driver of the pick up truck is the man in critical condition.

South Whidbey Fire/EMS responded within minutes of the crash. The Langley Police Department was the second responder and arrived about 10 minutes after the crash occurred.

The accident completely shut down both lanes of traffic for one and a half hours. The southbound lane was opened at 1:30 p.m.
