Cribbage tourney announces winners

Bennett took the title in the sixth annual Whidbey Island Cribbage Tournament at Greenbank Farm.

Forty-two players came out to compete in the tournament, which consists of a nine-game main event with the top eight finishers making their way to a best two-of-three games finals bracket.

Bennett was the top finisher, and took home $300 and a custom cribbage board for his effort.

Second place went to Robert Mariner of Bothell, who took home $160. Winning $100 each were Chuck Reffitt of Oak Harbor and Mike Durkee of Ferndale who made the bracket semifinal round in last month’s tourney.

The remaining four bracket players who left the finals during the first round each pocketed $60. They were David Acton, Ken Dougherty, Dave Stevenson and Adam Caveness.

High qualifier in the main event was David Acton of Oak Harbor with 15 game points, seven games won and a point spread of plus-118.

There were eight other players from the main event not making the finals bracket that won cash prizes of $10 to $40. Complete tourney results from the main and consolation events will be posted on the Web site www.cribbageboard.com under “info” in the header on the home page.

The seven-game consolation event was won rather convincingly by Sandra Ortgies of Coupeville. She won every game she played and turned in a card showing 14 game points, seven games won and a point differential of plus-95. Her prize was $150 and a nice cribbage board.

Ken Daugherty of Oak Harbor came in second with 12 game points, six games won and a point spread of plus-72, for a prize of $80. Al Swapp of Anacortes took third with a 12/5, plus-93 score that earned him $60. Three other players finished won cash awards: Fourth place went to Gene Rice (11/5, 68], fifth place to John Kjargaard (11/5, plus-30] and sixth to Adam Caveness of Greenbank (8/4. plus-28).
