A party and fundraiser for the South Whidbey Island Figure Drawing Group is this weekend.

Hosted by Whidbey Fine Art Studio and Brackenwood Gallery, the event is 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, June 27 at Whidbey Fine Art Studio, 813 Edgecliff Drive in Langley. An alternative rain date is July 11.

Saturday’s fundraiser will have several models present who will be draped, clothed and in Shakespearean costumes. The event is open to artists, art lovers and anyone with an interest. Those who come to watch may have their portrait painted if an artist is willing.

Cost is a suggested donation of $25 or more.

The drawing group was set up about two years ago as a community service for artists or anyone interested in non-instructed painting, drawing or sketching of live models, according to Cary Jurriaans, of Whidbey Island Fine Art Studios. Low attendance and covering expenses, however, have been a challenge.

“We have the rent to pay, the model to pay and if only two people show up, it’s not enough,” Jurriaans said.

She hopes Saturday’s fundraiser will help reduce the cost to regular participants and increase the frequency of sessions.

Drawing sessions are seasonal, and they will start in September. To join the group and receive regular updates and information, visit www.meetup.com/South-Whidbey-Island-Figure-Drawing-Group.
