Monday’s Langley City Council meeting included a brief blast from the past as a former mayor bestowed an award upon the previous chamber of commerce president.

Taking a short detour from the meeting, Mayor Tim Callison invited his predecessor, Fred McCarthy, to present the mayor’s excellence award. McCarthy had initially intended to give it to former Langley Chamber of Commerce president Nancy Rowan at his final council meeting in December, but Rowan was out of town. He gave it to her in recognition of her time spent leading the chamber as its president for the past year, executive director for three years and a couple of years as its vice president.

Former councilwoman Robin Black, who had served as vice president of the chamber of commerce, took over as president this year. She resigned her elected position Jan. 4, following up on a campaign promise to avoid any potential or perceived conflict of interest.

The chamber runs several events including the Sea Float Scramble, Mystery Weekend, and the Holly Jolly Parade.
