A one-car accident shut down East Harbor Road for more than an hour early Wednesday and knocked out power to a nearby home.

The driver was identified by the Island County Sheriff’s Office as Freeland resident Newton Kellogg, 18. He was southbound in a 2003 Mazda MPV at about 5 a.m. when his vehicle veered off the road and struck a power pole. The vehicle also rolled and destroyed a fence.

Kellogg was unharmed in the crash and declined to be taken to the hospital as a precautionary measure.

“The driver was very lucky not to suffer any injuries from the incident,” said Paul Busch, assistant chief of South Whidbey Fire/EMS.

According to Busch, Kellogg may have fallen asleep at the wheel, but police were still investigating the circumstances of the crash Wednesday.
