The first of a 10-month series of classes on how to grow your own food will be this coming weekend in Bayview.

The series, “Growing Groceries,” will cover seasonal, practical information and gardening skills.

Classes will be on the second Saturday of the month through November at Bayview School at Bayview Corner. The series is a partnership of the Whidbey Institute, Island County-WSU Extension Service, Good Cheer Food Bank and Garden and South Whidbey Tilth.

Two classes will be offered on Saturday, Feb. 13. From 9 a.m. to noon, Molly Petersons, Bill McInvaille and Cary Peterson will teach about winter gardening, including planning, selecting seeds and growing starts. For an extra $5, you can seed your own tray.

From 1 to 4 p.m., Sarah Birger will demonstrate pruning principles, and the class will practice on fruit trees at the nearby Good Cheer garden. Bring your loppers, and dress for the weather.

The class fee is $15, and scholarships are available.
