Goosefoot is offering food business workshops as part of its continuing exploration into the viability of a full-service shared commercial kitchen on South Whidbey.

“We want new food entrepreneurs to know what to expect when they decide to go into business,” said Sandy Whiting, Goosefoot executive director. “There are some hoops to jump through regarding licensing requirements and some expenses to incur before you even step foot into the kitchen.”

An introduction to food business licensing requirements and costs will take place from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, May 7 at the Sears House, located at Bayview Corner, and from 3-5 p.m. Thursday, May 12 at the Coupeville Public Library. Additional workshops may be held based on demand. Attendance is free, though registration is strongly encouraged.

Sarah Masoni, food and process development manager at Oregon State University’s Food Innovation Center will lead a comprehensive workshop titled Food Entrepreneurship: A to Z. Topics will range from processing options and pricing to packaging, labeling, shelf-life, food safety and more.

The event is 1-5 p.m. Monday, June 13 and 8:30 a.m. 1 p.m. Tuesday, June 14 at Sears House, 2812 Meinhold Road in Bayview.

Cost is $45 and includes a lunch. Register by May 23 and pay $35. Visit www.whidbeykitchen.org for details.

A commercial kitchen survey is also accessible on the website which Goosefoot encourages anyone interested in using a commercial kitchen to fill out.

Goosefoot, a non-profit organization whose mission includes local economic development, has been looking into the viability of developing a full-service incubator commercial kitchen facility on the South End of Whidbey for over one year. To register for the workshops, email marian@goosefoot.org or call 360-321-4145.
