Whidbey Island is apparently a top place in the nation for older couples to honeymoon.

AARP released the results this week of an unscientific survey of the best locations in the nation for a second honeymoon. The results were based on suggestions from the group’s Facebook page, along with “expert picks.”

Whidbey Island made the list at No. 5. The short description states that the “wild and wonderful beach, farm and forest terrain make for a magical retreat.”

The suggested destinations focus on South Whidbey. Honeymooners are urged to take sailboat lessons at the South Whidbey Marina, learn the basics of glass blowing at Callahan’s Firehouse Studio and Gallery and enjoy a multi-course menu at the Orchard Kitchen.

In addition, the AARP suggests honeymooners walk the Oak Harbor Art Trail, which is the series of public sculptures along Pioneer Way, beginning with the Kraken.

The AARP story points out that there’s a lot of second honeymooning happening. A quarter of married Americans have been married before, which is 42 million people. Also, some couples celebrate with a honeymoon after renewing their vows.
