ID theft, bicycle chase lands man in prison

A South Whidbey man who stole from an elderly woman, trespassed on a property and tried to escape from a police car while riding a bicycle was recently sent to prison.

Michael S. Ferren, 48, pleaded guilty in Island County Superior Court this week to three counts of identity theft in the first degree, one count of criminal trespass in the second degree and one count of obstructing a law enforcement officer.

The judge sentenced Ferren to a year and eight months in prison.

Earlier this year, a Freeland woman reported to police that someone had withdrawn a total of $1,500 from her bank account without her knowledge. She said she suspected Ferren of taking her ATM card; she said she had hired him to do odd jobs around the property, fed him meals and allowed him to stay at her home because he was homeless.

Ferren later admitted to taking the money, according to the police report.

In a separate incident, a deputy with the Island County Sheriff’s Office reported that he was driving in the Clinton area when a bicyclist, identified as Ferren, cut in front of him without stopping at a stop sign. The deputy activated his lights and sirens to try to stop Ferren, but he just pedaled faster.

The deputy eventually stopped in front of Ferren, who hopped off his bike and ran into the woods. The deputy caught and arrested him after Ferren collided with a briar patch. He was wanted on several warrants at the time, the report states.

Two years ago, Ferren was cited for trespassing at a rural Langley property. The property owner said Ferren was carrying a stick and looking for mushrooms, the police report states.
