Helen Price Johnson will seek a third term as Island County District 1 commissioner.

Price Johnson, a Democrat from Clinton, was out of town Tuesday and not available for comment, but she did send a text confirming her intention to seek re-election and that she’d officially announced her candidacy.

“Yes, I’m officially announcing my re-election campaign,” she wrote. “It’s  been an honor to serve, and I hope to continue my work on behalf of our island communities.”

Price Johnson is having a kick-off re-election campaign event early next month. The gathering is 2 p.m. Saturday, March 5 at Bayview Community Hall.

Price Johnson was appointed to a vacancy on the board in late 2008, becoming Island County’s first woman to serve as commissioner. She was elected to the position that November, along with Oak Harbor Democrat Angie Homola.

Price Johnson won a bid for re-election in 2012, defeating the late Jeff Lauderdale, a Central Whidbey Republican, for the partisan seat.

Commissioners serve four year terms, and their salary is currently set at $78,496.
