Island County commissioners approved a settlement offer this week in a property condemnation case on Camano Island.

The settlement spells the end to an eminent domain lawsuit in Island County Superior Court between the county and Ion and Maria Aitonean.

Commissioners voted 2-0 this week to pay the Aitoneans $81,780 for a piece of their property so Mountain High Road can be extended to Chase Road. The road work is part of a project to improve safety on Camano Hill Road.

The county acquired a little more than one acre of land from a 20-acre property that was being subdivided into five parcels.

Commissioners Mac McDowell and Phil Bakke voted Monday to approve the settlement; Commissioner John Dean was excused from the vote.
