Island County works to clear slide near Glendale

County crews were working quickly on Tuesday afternoon to clear a mudslide just above the beachside community of Glendale, officials said.

County crews were working quickly on Tuesday afternoon to clear a mudslide just above the beachside community of Glendale, officials said.

Island County Public Works Director Bill Oakes said the slide occurred next to Glendale Creek upstream from the community, and that part of the slide entered the stream.

He said the creek was being cleared to make sure that a potentially dangerous pool of water didn’t accumulate behind the mud and debris from the slide.

There are no homes near the slide area, and none are threatened, Oakes said. Glendale has a history of flooding, including a damaging one that occurred in April 2008.

Oakes said the recent heavy rainfall and winter thaw have created saturated conditions throughout Whidbey Island which contribute to mudslides, and that the county is monitoring potential trouble spots.
