Members of the Island Dance Competition Team won gold-level awards and other top honors during Northwest Regional competitions in March and April.

At the Celebrity Dance Competition held at Highline High Theatre in Burien on April 1-3, Sylvia Hurlburt and Melissa Smith earned a first-place gold trophy for their musical dance theatre duo “I Can’t Do It Alone,” taken from the musical “Chicago.”

Also “Build Me Up”, a jazz trio danced by Alexa Varga, Kendall Marshall and Grace Colby came home with a third-place trophy in the junior division.

Then the team went on to its first full convention/competition, Co.Dance, held at the Westin hotel in downtown Seattle on April 8-11, where the team not only competed but had dance classes all day both Saturday and Sunday. Teachers included the master tapper and instructor extraordinaire, Greg Russell, who recently was a semi-finalist on Paula Abdul’s television show “Live to Dance.”

Melissa Smith again did not disappoint with another “gold” for her lyrical solo “Time of My Life.” Elijah Ferguson and Hurlburt, of Coupeville, also earned the highest award level possible, “platinum,” for their tap duo “The Master.”

Special plaques were awarded to “high point” placements, and “The Master” received second place of all the teen duo/trios across every style of dance.

The awards were only the latest for members of the Island Dance Competition Team.

At the International Dance Challenge, held at the Burien Highline Performing Arts Center on March 11-13, hip hop soloist Grace Colby received a Judges’ Choice “Special Award” ribbon for the “Best Use of a Prop.”

Her dance, “The Choice is Yours,” uses a life-size dummy on wheels, which prompted the judges to note upon presentation of the ribbon that Grace’s solo was a “dynamic duo.
