Langley Middle School’s Math Olympiad Team took third place in the MathCounts Chapter Competition on Feb. 27.

The event was held at Explorer Middle School in Everett, where six area middle schools and 30-plus students competed. Eight students represented Langley Middle School at the competition. They included sixth-graders Dominic Montaperto and Jordan Wu, seventh-graders Aidan Donnelly, Aiden O’Brien, Brent Batchelor and Ian Maddux and eighth-graders Sam Baesler and Sarah Cravy.

The competition consisted of two rounds for individuals and one team round. The individual round included 30 math problems with a 40-minute time limit. Problems ranged from moderate to very difficult and tested the students’ abilities to work quickly but carefully. The second individual round consisted of eight problems presented two at a time with a six minute time limit, allowing more time for analyzing and solving the problems. The team round tested analytic skills and forced teams to use differing solutions and work toward a common goal.
