South Whidbey kids got a few tips on how to land a fish this past weekend. The Fishin’ Club held a learn-to-fish day at Lone Lake on Saturday, teaching children the basics of fishing. “We had a wonderful turnout of 10 kids, and five adults,” said E Z Rider, a club member. The Fishin’ Club held a learn-to-fish day at Lone Lake on Saturday, teaching children the basics of fishing.

“We had a wonderful turnout of 10 kids, and five adults,” said E Z Rider, a club member.

The day started with a presentation by Hawk Myzack and Ken Price on the basics. Ralph Downes, Whidbey’s state fish and game warden was on hand too, offering advice on safe handling and release.

Students started with casting practice then went for 30-minute trips around the lake in boats provided by the fishing club.

The day ended with a lunch of hamburgers and hot dogs, and everyone who attended was given a fishing pole and lure to get their fishing career started.

Organization President Scott Waltenbaugh said this is the first year of the program, and that it went well.

“It went over great,” he said.

Additional learn-to-fish days will likely be held this summer but dates and times are not yet determined.
