Many incumbents seeking re-election

It’s a big election year for Island County with many county positions on the November ballot.

In addition, state representatives will also be asking for votes.

It looks like most of the people holding those seats wish to hang on to them. Island County Sheriff Mark Brown is the only one among the county’s elected officials to say he’s not running again.

Rick Felici, currently the chief criminal deputy, has said he will run for sheriff as a Republican.

Island County Commissioner Rick Hannold said he plans to run again and already has a challenger. Janet St. Clair, a Democrat from Camano Island, said earlier this year she will run against the Republican commissioner.

County Prosecutor Greg Banks said he doesn’t see any reason not to run at this point. He currently has no party affiliation.

Others who said they will run again include Coroner Robert Bishop, a Republican, Treasurer Wanda Grone, a Republican, Assessor Mary Engle, a Republican, Auditor Sheilah Crider, a Republican, Clerk Debra Van Pelt, a Democrat, and District Court Judge Bill Hawkins.

State Rep. Dave Hayes, R-Camano, and Rep. Norma Smith, R-Clinton, both filed for re-election with the Public Disclosure Commission.

Hayes voted earlier this month to shield himself and the rest of the legislature from the state Public Records Act, a move that was vetoed by Gov. Jay Inslee. Smith was absent and did not vote on the measure.

Candidate filing week, when the candidates make it official, is May 14-18.
