The Port of South Whidbey commissioners will convene for special meeting today.

The Thursday, Oct. 3, meeting was scheduled after a number of unexpected cost issues arose last week for the South Whidbey Harbor marina expansion project, according to Port Operations Manager Ed Field.

While working to install the water pipe, work crews ran into buried logs and soil contaminated with hydrocarbons — old fuel. It’s not yet clear how the discovery might affect the budget but Field said it would it will likely result in some additional expenses.

“We’re literally down here right now trying to figure out how much,” said Field, Thursday morning. “Once we figure that out, we’ll be calling the commissioners.”

The meeting begins at 2 p.m. in the Port Office Conference Room, 1804 Scott Rd. in Freeland.
