Despite talks of South Whidbey Fire/EMS wanting to retrieve it for its collection of historical fire district memorabilia, the city and fire district agreed to keep it in place for the foreseeable future. No formal agreement was made over the sign, a relic of the lone fire station run by the city before joining Island County Fire District 3, which later was renamed South Whidbey Fire/EMS.

“What looked like a great, big standoff between two groups turned out not to be,” Mayor Fred McCarthy said.

Part of the deal, McCarthy said during the city council meeting Dec. 7, was that as long as the building keeps its current use the sign may remain as part of the city’s history.

McCarthy said the city’s historic preservation commission and the nonprofit Langley Main Street Association stated that the sign was iconic to the city.
