Governor Jay Inslee has declared June 2016 Orca Month for the 10th consecutive year.

Governor Jay Inslee has declared June 2016 Orca Month for the 10th consecutive year.

In celebration of Orca Month, events throughout the Puget Sound are being put on by The Orca Salmon Alliance, of which the South Whidbey-based Orca Network is a member. Events in Langley include a concert at the Langley Whale Center at 5:30 p.m. June 4 and a workshop at the Whidbey Children’s Theater at 10 a.m. June 18.

Joining Washington in the declaration are Oregon and British Columbia, which is celebrating Orca Month for the first time this year.

Orca Month highlights the extreme danger the Southern Resident orca whale population is in while also celebrating its natural beauty. A group will march to Governor Inslee’s office on behalf  of endangered orcas at 11 a.m. on June 24 to present petitions, letters and messages of support for the breaching of the four Lower Snake River dams.
