Passenger injured in Aug. 17 crash dies | Corrected

An Edmonds man injured in an Aug. 17 South Whidbey traffic accident has died.

The King County medical examiner pronounced Gary Hughes, 71, had died from injuries at 10:20 p.m. Sept. 1, according to Washington State Patrol.

Hughes was a passenger in a Hyundai Santa Fe that was involved in a head-on collision on Highway 525 near Smugglers Cove Road. State Patrol reported the Hyundai driven by Susan Hughes failed to yield while turning off Smugglers Cove and struck a Jeep Wrangler driven by Freeland resident Jennifer Buchholz.

Gary Hughes and Buchholz were airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle and the Hyundai’s driver was transported to WhidbeyHealth Medical Center with serious injuries.

The cause of the collision is under investigation, according to the State Patrol report.
