Planned ferry fare hikes coming in May

Planned fare hikes on Washington State Ferries will go into effect May 1, the agency announced this week. Walk-on and passenger fares will increase 1 percent and vehicle/driver fares will go up 2.5 percent on all domestic sailings, according to a rider alert the agency released on Monday.

Planned fare hikes on Washington State Ferries will go into effect May 1, the agency announced this week.

Walk-on and passenger fares will increase 1 percent and vehicle/driver fares will go up 2.5 percent on all domestic sailings, according to a rider alert the agency released on Monday.

Fares are set by the Washington Transportation Commission.

May 1 also marks the date that the peak season surcharge goes into effect for non-commuter vehicles and drivers; multi-ride products will not be affected by the surcharge.  Peak season runs through Friday, Sept. 30.

The definition of over-height vehicles will also change May 1, from 7 feet 6 inches to 7 feet 2 inches. Vehicles between 22-30 feet long that exceed the new limit will be charged the over-height fare. The purpose of the change is to align the height threshold with the actual overhead clearance on the side vehicle decks of most ferries, according to the rider alert.
