Safe Ride Home Whidbey Island offers free rides home to anyone who finds themselves in unsafe situations, but the organization needs a little help from three island-wide fundraisers.

Because Safe Ride Home is nonprofit and run completely on donations, they are holding fundraising car washes to raise money. Come by for a wash, give a donation or to volunteer at any of the three locations from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, July 28 at Coastal Community Bank in Freeland, Whidbey Island Bank in Oak Harbor or Whidbey Island Bank in Coupeville.

A community member has pledged to match $2 for every $1 the car washes raise.

“Safe Ride Home is a community service offered to everyone. It is a before the fact, preventative program that pre-pays the taxi cabs of Island County to provide anyone who needs it a safe ride home when they find themselves in an unsafe situation,” said Brian Grimm, organizer.

If someone should not drive for any reason they can call 341-TAXI and get a free, safe and confidential ride home.

Grimm said Safe Ride Home is a grassroots organization that blossomed out of the passion and motivation of a handful of Whidbey Island residents who want to improve the safety of roads for all drivers and passengers, regardless of their ages. Safe Ride Home is housed under the nonprofit organization of Whidbey Community Hall in the Bayview Community of South Whidbey.
