Sailor shoots man, himself

A Navy man shot another man and then himself in Oak Harbor early in the morning of June 9, police report.

Thomas Heintzman, 34, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Island County Coroner Robert Bishop.

Oak Harbor Police Chief Kevin Dresker said the incident occurred while a small group of people were gathered at a home on London Terrace.

Heintzman, who lived at the house, discovered that his wife was in the bedroom with another man, Dresker said.

Heintzman found that the door to the bedroom was locked and then went downstairs to retrieve a gun. He returned to the bedroom, forced the door open and fired four shots.

One shot grazed the back of the other man. Two others hit the wall and ceiling. Heintzman then shot himself in the head, Dresker said.

The man suffered a grazing wound and went to the hospital for treatment. He told investigators that he was in the bedroom to use the bathroom.

The people involved in the incident had been drinking, Dresker said.

Police responded to the 911 call just before 1 a.m.

Dresker explained that the incident was investigated thoroughly even though it appears from all indications to be a suicide.

Along with Oak Harbor police, crime scene investigators from the Washington State Patrol spent hours at the scene.

A special agent from the Naval Criminal Investigative Service also assisted.
