A 17-year-old Oak Harbor boy remains in serious condition in the intensive care unit of Harborview Medical Center in Seattle after being shot early Wednesday morning, a hospital spokesperson said Friday.

Deputies responded to a medical call at a North Whidbey residence at 1 a.m. and discovered that the teenager, identified as John S. Johnson, had suffered a gunshot wound, according to Island County Sheriff Mark Brown.

Detectives are investigating the shooting. Brown said it doesn’t appear to be a random act and investigators don’t believe there is a threat to the public at this time.

He said the investigation is “fluid” and that he couldn’t give additional details at this point, other than to say the shooting happened north of Oak Harbor.

The Oak Harbor school district identified Johnson as a former student. A district spokeswoman confirmed that detectives were at the high school this week speaking with teachers, which is routine in many investigations.

District officials issued a statement Friday.

“Our Oak Harbor School community is deeply saddened to learn of the tragedy involving John ‘Jay’ Johnson, one of our former students in the Oak Harbor School District,” it states. “He spent most of his youth in our schools, beginning in elementary school, and is known by many of our staff and students. Our hearts go out to him and his family, and we will do all we can to offer our support and prayers during this difficult time.”
