More importantly, it matched well with the blue on homecoming queen Madyson Hunter’s cheer outfit.

Their smiles beamed from the stage at Waterman Field during the football game’s halftime celebration Oct. 11. Hundreds of people packed the grandstand and dozens lined the railing, inching up to get as close as possible during the homecoming ceremony and coronation. The court’s finalists included Jack Hood, Nick French, Madi Boyd and Maia Sparkman.

South Whidbey High School’s homecoming featured four floats. Each was decorated with an around-the-world theme by the four grades.

The freshman class rolled out in an African safari-themed float, complete with a silhouetted backdrop of giraffes among massive banyan trees and elephants.

Sophomores featured a Parisian theme, including an Eiffel Tower of white lights, paper mustaches and berets.

The junior class went south, about as far south as the globe will spin, to Antarctica. Several students were dressed as penguins.

South Whidbey’s seniors opted for a warmer environment and had a jungle-themed float, with paper vines and fake parrots.
