South Whidbey academic, art scholars awarded

Several South Whidbey High School students were the recipients of awards and scholarships from the Whidbey Island Branch of the American Association of University Women at a recent awards ceremony. At an April 19 reception in Coupeville, the organization recognized graduating academic and art scholars as well as junior science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) students. The recipients for top 11th graders were Amelia Hensler (science), Kari Hustad (math) and Fiona Callahan (technology). Engineering was not included in the awards.

The South Whidbey High School Senior Academic Scholarship for $2,000 — a division for 12th grade students — was awarded to Amara Garibiyan, while the $600 Dale Fischer Memorial Art Scholarship was given to Maddie Barker.

The American Association of University Women is committed to making a significant impact on education and equity for women and girls on the island. There are over 90 active and involved women with the organization.
