Applicants must live within the district, be at least 18, possess a valid Washington drivers license and be a high school graduate. They must also pass a drug screening, medical exam, background check, written exam, and work capacity test.

Volunteer firefighters must be physically fit and mentally capable of handling challenging work. They must also possess “good moral character.”

“The firefighter’s role in the community extends beyond fighting fires and other easily identifiable duties,” said Deputy Chief Mike Cotton. “As a member, one is looked upon with respect by the citizens we serve. Therefore, we must embody the highest standards.”

South Whidbey Fire/EMS currently has a team of 60 volunteers. Volunteers have provided fire suppression, emergency medical service, and marine and rope rescue to residents and visitors for over 65 years.
