A crew from South Whidbey Fire/EMS will observe a final sea trial of a replacement engine in its one-year-old fireboat on Thursday in Anacortes.

If all goes well, they’ll motor it back to Whidbey, said Chief Rusty Palmer.

The engine failed this summer, and the total cost to replace it was $42,000. The district’s insurance company, Enduris, will pick up the bulk of the expense.

The replacement engine was acquired in September and was installed at North Island Marine in Anacortes. Palmer said the company is still waiting for a sensor which monitors heat exhaust temperature. It will also serve as an indicator for any problems with the newly acquired engine.

North Island Marine completed a sea trial for the engine Oct. 8, which was successful, Palmer said.
