South Whidbey High School has been recognized as a top-performing school in the state of Washington and received two honors in the 2013 Washington Achievement Awards.

The school received awards in overall excellence and a special recognition for extended graduation rates.

“This is an extraordinary accomplishment and is a direct reflection of the hard work and dedication of our staff and students with tremendous support from our parents and community,” said Superintendent Jo Moccia, in a news release.

Schools are recognized in six categories of the awards: overall excellence, high progress, reading growth, math growth, extended graduation rate and English language acquisition.

The achievement award program, which is sponsored by the Washington State Board of Education and the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction, evaluates the performance of each school  based on the Achievement Index and criteria set by the federal Elementary and Secondary Education Act flexibility waiver.
