Earlier this month, South Whidbey High School student Annie Philp traveled to Olympia to serve as a page in the Washington State House of Representatives.

She was sponsored by 10th District Rep. Norma Smith, R-Clinton.

Philp is a dancer with the Whidbey Island Dance Theatre and the secretary of the Social Justice Club at her high school. She loves to travel and has been to the continent of Africa, as well as to Central America.

As part of her page duties during her week at the Capitol, Philp learned to navigate the many buildings on the Capitol campus while delivering messages and documents to legislators and staff. She also attended page school every day to learn about the inner workings of the Legislature.

“I always find joy in getting to know the students who participate in the House Page Program, and I found Annie to be smart, enthusiastic and inquisitive,” Smith said.

Page applicants must have a legislative sponsor, be between the ages of 14 and 16, and obtain written permission from their parents and school. Pages earn $35 per day while serving in the program.
