South Whidbey High School students protest Donald Trump

Nine South Whidbey High School students walked out of class this week to protest the election of U.S. President-elect Donald Trump on Monday afternoon.

The students stood alongside Maxwelton Road near the campus while chanting “Love trumps hate.” They also held up signs that read “Not My President,” and “My Body My Choice!” Trump has been the center of national debate since his successful election, spurring demonstrations in Seattle and Oregon over the past week.

That sentiment has now arrived on South Whidbey via the students, who said they didn’t agree with the president-elect’s values and were standing up for what they believed in.

The protesting began at around 1:30 p.m. and lasted around an hour. Cars occasionally honked as they drove by.

“We don’t agree with his racism, his sexism, his Islamophobia,” said Annie Saltee, a sophomore.

“It’s our future, so we need to think about it and not just stand by and watch,” added sophomore Jessie Johnson.

Saltee said there were originally supposed to be more students walking out of class and included in the protest but “so many people chickened out.”

“We decided to stay out here because it was really important,” Saltee said.

The students said principal John Patton was aware of the protest. Patton declined a request for comment.

“He seemed pretty chill,” Saltee said. “He wasn’t mad at us.”

Johnson thought other students may have backed out due to fear of disciplinary action from the school.

“We know from our history classes that consequences are a big part of peaceful protest,” Saltee said.

It was the first time protesting for eight of the students, save junior Hannah Nielsen, who said she has attended Occupy Seattle in the past.
