Marcia VanDyke is the new publisher of The South Whidbey Record and On!Whidbey magazine.

She will replace Sherry Mays who will leave The Record after nearly four years as publisher on Sept. 14.

VanDyke is currently the publisher of The Record’s sister paper, The Whidbey News-Times in Oak Harbor, and will continue to oversee operations at the News-Times, Northwest Navigator and OH!Magazine.

“I am excited to announce the promotion of Marcia VanDyke to publisher of The South Whidbey Record,” said Lori Maxim, vice president of Sound Publishing’s West Sound Newspaper operations.

VanDyke has worked for Sound Publishing for 14 years and she is no stranger to island newspapers.

She spent four years as advertising director for the Whidbey News-Times and Northwest Navigator. Her first job as publisher was with the Journal of the San Juans before Sound Publishing purchased the paper. Maxim recruited her back to Sound Publishing and VanDyke became publisher of the Whidbey News-Times nine years ago.

“I am thrilled to have been selected as publisher of the South Whidbey Record,” VanDyke said. “Working at the News-Times, I’ve had a lot of interaction with the South Whidbey Record on many of our shared products and am looking forward to being a part of this award winning paper and their team.”

During her time on Whidbey Island she has grown a reputation as a champion for the community.

“I look forward to spending time on the South End of the island and playing an active role in the community,” she said.

She has been honored by the Rotary Club and the Oak Harbor School District for the instrumental role she played in raising funds and awareness for Oak Harbor High School’s new football stadium.

She has been honored by the United Way of Island County,

Oak Harbor and Coupeville chambers of commerce for her dedication to the community.

Mays said VanDyke will be a great asset.

“It should be exciting to watch the next phase of The South Whidbey Record under the leadership of Marcia VanDyke, who was my mentor,” she said. “She brings with her a real love of Whidbey Island and years of publishing experience. I’m sure she will continue to foster the great relationship the Record has with our amazing community.”

Terri Tinker has been promoted to advertising manager for the Whidbey News-Times, South Whidbey Record, Northwest Navigator North, On!Whidbey and OH!Magazine.

Many South Enders know Tinker as The Record’s advertising sales representative for the past three years, and she will continue to work with many of her local clients.

Tinker said she strongly believes in the power of advertising to help businesses succeed, and in the importance of community-oriented newspapers. Having worked with clients on and off the island, she is excited to have the opportunity to work with the sales staff of both papers to help businesses grow.

Working in the newspaper industry for nearly 10 years, Tinker has been the marketing representative at the South Whidbey Record since December 2005. Prior to that, she worked at the Whidbey News-Times, the Little Nickel and owned a community newspaper in Oregon.

For her achievements in advertising sales, Tinker has received company and industry recognition, including numerous awards from the Washington Newspaper Publishers Association.

Sound Publishing owns 32 weekly, bi-weekly and daily newspapers in Washington, 18 classified shoppers in the Nickel Publications group, and works with 18 network partner newspapers.
